Philippi, the most important archeological site of Kavala, has a special cultural interest. Among the most important monuments are the monumental walls of the 4th century, the ancient theater, the market, the palaestra, the prison of the Apostle Paul and the four imposing Basilicas. It is worth noting that it was a great Roman colony and gained great importance due to its location on the Egnatia Odos.
One of the most important paths of religious interest in Greece is the “Steps of the Apostle Paul” that move not only the faithful, but also those who are initiated in history. Philippi is a special milestone in the course of the Apostle of the Nations, as there he baptized the first Greek and European Christian, Lydia Philippi, and founded the first Christian Church in Europe, promoting Philippi as a metropolis of Christianity.

8:00 a.m.
We start early in the morning, around 8.00, from the center of Thessaloniki. The road route that we will follow this time, will be special, since we meet an impressive historical monument.
A narrative of the glorious Macedonian history, the Lion of Amphipolis with a height of 5.37 meters, stands out for its imposing appearance but also for its interesting style. We can easily distinguish the special performance of its anatomical features: rich mane, strong snout, intense details reminiscent of strength and superiority. From there, we head to Amphipolis, where we will tour the museum of the same name for almost an hour. A small and beautiful museum with remarkable findings and exhibits, a wealth of information and extensive reports that cover all periods of the long history of Amphipolis. We will also have the opportunity to admire the head of the sphinx, which was found in the third chamber of the burial monument and came to light after the 2014 excavation at the Kastas Tomb.
Next, we head to Philippi, an area of particular interest, both historical and religious. We will walk in the streets of the ancient city, next to the majestic public buildings, the ancient theater, the temples. We will see images of another era springing from the ruins, we will learn legends and stories that will bring to life the history of a great place.
Of course, we could not miss the Baptistery. It is a unique church in the shape of a cross, where Lydia, the first European Christian, was baptized by the Apostle Paul. We will admire the wonderful mosaics, the impressive hagiographies and the marble monument, which fill you with awe! The sound of the flowing waters, the trees, the green that embraces in a special way this sacred place compose a scene that makes you feel the absolute peace and tranquility.
A little later, we leave behind Philippi and “steps of the Apostle Paul” and walk to Kavala. There, we will have the opportunity to enjoy our coffee or food, relaxing for about two hours. Then, we board our bus, taking the way back to Thessaloniki.
